Once again I find myself, not offended.
When famed chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain was asked what he would cook for Kim Jong Un or President Trump he replied simply, “Hemlock”. I think this is terribly funny and clever. It’s a poison you know, the one that killed Socrates. I don’t think for a moment he meant it or that the Secret Service needs to go out to his home and take fingerprints and create a terror watch file on him.
It was a joke, and a good one. In a single word it conveyed humor and an entire message about his opinion. That’s excellent stuff.
It’s also quite in keeping with Bourdain’s persona. He’s quite a character if you don’t know. He’s rough. He’s crass. And by the end of most episodes he’s intoxicated. That’s how he is. He seems to throw himself headlong into anything he does. When it comes to food and the place it plays in the human condition, he gets it to his core. He seems to love making connections with other people though food. Serve him a good meal, made with love, that connects him to your home, and he’s a friend for life.
America, it seems to me, has lost its sense of humor. Black humor, sardonic quips, are very American. Bourdain’s answer, to me, is quintessentially Colonial American. We GET to poke the crown. We GET to hold those in power in contempt. We GET to feel equal or superior to those who claim to be our betters.
Yes, it’s a joke about murder, and that’s what makes it funny.
Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain said this week that he’d poison President Donald Trump’s food if given the chance.Ha ha — hilarious! What wit!
