This is really one that is beyond me. The pope says that “Muslim terrorism does not exist” and that just baffles me. Oh, I get what he’s trying to convey and that’s to say that it’s not accurate to paint the entire religion that way. Fine, but that’s not what people do when we use terms like “Muslim terrorism”. I suppose there are some people who paint all Muslims with that same brush but I don’t see that as the majority of people.
I think most people are smart enough to know that the term “Muslim terrorism” means terrorism that is motivated by a belief in Islam. The terrorists themselves are perfectly happy to tell you that much. Why should the pope try to argue a point that the people with the bombs strapped to their chests are perfectly happy to admit? When I say I think most people are smart enough to know that I’m not necessarily implying that the pope isn’t smart I’m implying that he’s lying. Yes, I’m saying the pope is lying. The kind of lying is known as sophistry. Those who use it think they are being clever by using words in a specific way. It happens to be a way that bends the truth. I don’t think for one moment that the pope doesn’t understand the origin of terrorism in the world today. It’s Muslims. Are all Muslims terrorists? That’s the question the pope is trying to answer but in doing so he paints an inaccurate picture of what’s going on.
Personally, I don’t care what motivates a terrorist.
I don’t think for one moment we can use their motivation as a means to stop them. If the motivation is, as some suspect, western policies of war, colonialism, imperialism, meddling, etc. we could change all those policies, keep to ourselves, not interfere and does anyone honestly think that the terrorism would stop? What if, as some suspect, it’s American values (or the lack thereof), our short skirts, the pig we eat, the wine we drink, the movies we watch and the music we listen to. We could stop all of that, do you really think that would stop terrorism? There are a lot of what ifs like that. What if we weren’t Christian, what if we weren’t Jews, would that stop terrorism?
What is terrorism about? It’s about the same thing it’s always about, power and control. After the September 11th attacks there was a lot of flag waving and vigorous “being American”. Many people were heard to say we needed to do that because if not “the terrorists win”. I think we’ve seen that they did win. They changed our way of life. But I suppose that’s an aside.
As sure as the pope was that there wasn’t Muslim terrorism he is sure there is a terrible danger from man made climate change.
“We know “what happens when we deny science and disregard the voice of Nature,” the Pope said. “Let us not fall into denial. Time is running out. Let us act. I ask you again—all of you, people of all backgrounds including native people, pastors, political leaders—to defend Creation.””
So, ignore Muslim terrorism but we have to act now to defend Creation. I find this to be a stunning bit of ignorance from a man who leads so many religious people. I’m sorry, I don’t mean to offend, I really don’t. But think for a moment what he’s saying. God’s creation is in danger but his children aren’t.
I think liberty is vital. That’s the motivation behind my writing and much of my thinking. I see liberty being attacked. I see Muslim terrorism taking it, I see those who would ignore it as complicit. I see men using climate change as an excuse. Both groups trying to frighten people into submitting. The methods might be different but the purpose is the same.
Sharia law and climate law mean the same thing in the end. I really wish the pope would stick to God’s law because his intelligence in the laws of the world is incredibly lacking.
