Nancy Pelosi said this in a recent interview on “Face the Nation” with John Dickerson when asked what she would say to Democrats who want a new direction for the party, “Well, I don’t think people want a new direction.” Thus proving exactly what I said the other day; her reelection is a sign that the Democrats learned absolutely nothing from this last election.
As a party the Democrats have state majorities in only 4 states. Her challenger for the leadership spot, Representative Tim Ryan even admitted that the Democrats “are no longer a national party”. Trust me, I’m fine with that but when I see such blindness, such willful ignorance as Pelosi displays here I can’t help but speak up about it.
I believe firmly that most Americans outside of politics want the same things but are going about it in different, often disparate ways. They can find common ground only if they are looking for it. When their leaders in congress refuse to acknowledge there even is a problem then no solution that pleases a majority of citizens can ever be found and the national divide we all feel will continue.
For years Republicans have acted like losers even when they win. It’s likely, and certainly appears so from his cabinet picks, that Trump is going to act like a winner. This is important. Winners should act like winners and losers should act like losers. Doing so allows self-reflection. A winner can understand why he won, can make choices and decision in the future based on what worked. The looser can move toward winning by assessing why he lost and what can be done about it.
Progressives have supported giving out awards for just showing up for so long now that they have lost the concepts of victory and defeat. For years this has frustrated those who work for victory. But they have only seen it as a stupidity, as a weakness, but we can see now that it is a deeply dangerous outlook that prevents growth through self-reflection and analysis.
Life is full of wins and losses a fact that seems lost on Nancy Pelosi.
