I am sure by now you have all heard about the letter that was written about Judge Kavanaugh. The author has accused him of sexual assault. This took place when he and the accuser were in high school. It’s reasonable to assume that the timing is politically motivated. Of course I can’t say if that really is the case or not. It may be that the woman doesn’t care so much about political parties but does actually care that good people are put on the court. This isn’t the same as Anita Hill who accused Clarence Thomas of harassment yet followed him around to different positions. In this case the woman didn’t have contact with him and she sought medical care (according to her letter) after the incident.
So on the one hand we have people dismissing it because the timing is dubious. On the other we have people dismissing it because it was so long ago. They argue that he’s not the same person. And still others that dismiss it because it was in high school and he was just a kid at the time. Some 60 women or so from his high school have signed a letter supporting him. So some want to dismiss the accusations because of that.
For his part Kavanaugh says, “This is a completely false allegation. I have never done anything like what the accuser describes — to her or to anyone.” Basically saying this isn’t behavior he just wouldn’t engage in and never did.
So I am just now bringing this up because I have been trying to digest it all and decide just what I think about it. I’m left not really knowing because we don’t know. If he’s telling the truth and he not only didn’t do it but never behaved that way then I think that would be despicable. But, if he really did then I question if he’s the right person for the job. I realize that it was in high school and I go back and forth on what that means. It could mean he was drunk and acted foolishly and cruelly but isn’t a cruel person. Or it could mean that he is a cruel person and hides it well. How can I ever know which it is? I don’t think I can so it seems wise to err on the side of caution.
Lastly, the FBI was given the information, looked into it and said there wasn’t anything there for them to investigate. That could be because it would be a local matter or because there simply isn’t a case to be had.
I’ve read quite a few commentaries from both left and right sources that say this is about abortion. The left fears that Kavanaugh will be the vote that gets rid of Roe vs Wade and some of the right are saying the same only with a hopeful, rather than a fearful, tone. I’m mentioned before that this isn’t something that either side should really be hanging their hat on due to the complexities of how the court hears cases and treats precedence. There is also the fact that even if Roe vs Wade were overturned it doesn’t mean abortion is suddenly illegal. It simply would become an issue for each state to decide.
No matter how we slice it this IS political and as such it makes the entire thing an unseemly swirl of accusations, gossip, secret combinations, and confusion.
